5,500+ new username modules: search 8,000+ sources

Osintly username search now checks 8,000+ sources, with 5,500+ new modules across Mastodon, PeerTube, Lemmy, Pixelfed and forums, and faster searches.

Username search on Osintly now checks more than 8,000 sources. Since November 1 we have added over 5,500 username modules, more than twice the size of our entire previous username catalog. Searches also got faster, even with three times as many modules to run.

Where the new modules look

Most of the new modules cover places that general username tools rarely reach: the independent servers of the fediverse and long-running community forums.

Source typeNew modulesExamples
Mastodon, Misskey and other federated social serversabout 2,240MastodonDE, FediScience.org, graz.social, OSM Town
PeerTube video serversabout 1,670kyiv.tube, LuxTube, AstroTube
Forums and community sitesabout 1,360PhysicsOverflow, GameSalad Forums, ComfyUI, Hex-Rays
Lemmy communitiesabout 300Feddit.it, Infosec.Pub, Lemmy.wtf
Pixelfed photo serversabout 170pixelfed.de, Pixelfed.ca

On the fediverse, a username is only unique inside one server. An account called alex on one Mastodon server and alex on another are two different accounts, often run by different people. Each server is its own module on Osintly, so a search tells you exactly which servers know the handle instead of guessing from one big instance.

Forums work the same way. People often keep one handle on a hobby or developer community for years, and those profiles can carry join dates, signatures and links that a large social network hides.

You can browse every source, with its scope and last update, in the modules catalog.

Faster, even with more to check

More modules usually means a slower search. We rebuilt how a username search runs so the opposite happened:

  • A full username search runs over 8,000 modules with a median time of 54 seconds. On November 3, before this work, the median was 151 seconds with about 5,500 modules.
  • The modules that most often find accounts run first, so the strongest results show up in the first seconds while the rest of the search continues. We rank modules on real searches and leave out very common names such as mike, which match almost everywhere and would skew the order.
  • Results stream into the page as each module finishes. You can start reading cards without waiting for the last server to answer.
  • Busy hours hold up better. In a test on our production setup, eight username searches running at the same time finished in about 100 seconds, against about 400 seconds before.
  • Smart routing now gets results from more sites that used to come back empty.
  • Other fixes in this release

  • Breached accounts are back on username searches.
  • Paid tools spend less time before they query a provider. The quota check that runs before each lookup went from about 1.1 seconds to about 0.15 seconds.
  • A slow usage check could make a search fail to start with a "Search failed" message. We found the cause and fixed it.
  • What a username match means

A match shows that an account with that handle exists on a site. It does not prove that the same person owns it. Common names will match on thousands of servers, so compare profile details, avatars, links and dates before you connect two accounts.

Some servers go offline or block automated lookups at times. A missing result is not proof that the account does not exist.

    Try it
